Sales discovery questions are critical to every salesperson's sales process because they are the only way to uncover a customer’s pain points. So, the importance of sales discovery questions cannot be overstated, as it marks the beginning of every buying or sales journey. It opens up more authentic conversations and builds more value in every customer interaction, leading to more sales and more engaged customers.
When the right mix of sales discovery is applied in customer interactions, it provides a clear roadmap on how to progress the next steps and highlights what issues, concerns or challenges the customer is facing. Much like a doctor uncovering symptoms in a patient, sales discovery narrows down pain for deeper conversations. Remember, no one really cares about your FAB, which stands for features, advantages and benefits; what they do care about is how valuable you could be to them and if you can help them overcome the identified challenge.
No doctor would propose a medical solution without first fully understanding the symptoms and cause. As a sales professional, that is also your role: to get agreement on the pain and the cause of that pain before offering up solutions. Sales discovery is about genuine two-way conversations, not one-way sales pitches. The customer needs to know they are being listened to, they are understood and you have their priorities in mind and not your own. They want to feel valued and that investing their time is beneficial.
